Brunei has experienced a significant 50% increase in broadband usage in the past year and a threefold increase over three years, driven by stringent COVID-19 measures, including work-from-home mandates. To address the surge, the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and Unified National Networks (UNN) executed network upgrades on August 13-14. Despite improvements, network quality is undermined by rising cable thefts, with 45 thefts recorded in three months, costing over $500,000 in repairs. Law enforcement and UNN are combating this. Additionally, UNN has strengthened international connectivity with extra submarine cable capacity, mitigating potential future disruptions.
