Teachers, mentors and parents were credited for the success of two outstanding Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) students who were feted in an award presentation ceremony yesterday. Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Finance and Risk Management graduate Dayangku Nursyarah Waznah binti Pengiran Haji Suhaili, the recipient of the Meritorious Award, Outstanding Life Skill Achiever and People’s Choice Award for UTB Project Showcase 2023, said she was honoured to receive such prestigious awards. The awards not only reflected her achievements but also the generosity and support of the lecturers, staff and management. Dayangku Nursyarah Waznah said COVID-19 was one of the main challenges but online studies also had its advantages. Nevertheless, she believes face-to-face learning allows more interaction and better absorption of knowledge. “Throughout the course, I had to balance other commitments, like holding a part-time job and being a member of the students council. Time management played a pivotal role and I had to learn to prioritise important tasks and follow schedules as strictly as possible. “I also tried to maintain work-life balance. I had a clear mind at all times. Besides getting assistance from lecturers, I also received help from my fellow students and mentors,” said Dayangku Nursyarah Waznah. On her success, she credited her family for their prayers and guidance as well as lecturers for shaping her academic path. She also thanked her mentors for their guidance as well as encouragement from her friends. He said he initially wanted to graduate with at least a second class honour, so “achieving a first-class honours and winning three awards were beyond my wildest dream. I am grateful and feel blessed for the government scholarship making this all possible”. He said asking questions was his strategy to achieve good grades and overcome challenges. “There is no shame in not understanding a concept. Ask your friends for help, and if they can’t help, ask lecturers either in class or afterwards. I found asking after class to be the best as the lecturers could explain face-to-face in greater details.” Abdul Muqsit also advised students to have good relations with lecturers as they may be potential supervisors for the final year project. “It makes discussions easier and less awkward if you are already comfortable with them. It makes it easier to understand their expectations for the project,” he said. He also said, “I always prepared for my tutorials early so that during classes, I could discuss the answers with the lecturers instead of working on the problems. Practising past year papers is also important as it familiarise you with the format and types of questions asked.” Abdul Muqsit said common challenges are procrastination and doing work last-minute. Another one is having difficulty focusing on work at home, especially in the comfort of the bedroom. “To overcome this, I forced myself to be in the library almost every day. I would finish up tutorials or do assignments in the library,” he said adding that UTB library has a room open around the clock to accommodate students who work late into the night. Abdul Muqsit said COVID-19 presented a challenge since he would rather not study at home. It took him a while to adapt to online classes and grateful to have scored good grades during the period. He said his parents had been lending him support for years, thus “I would not have achieved these results without their love and support for me”. Abdul Muqsit also credited his friends for his academic success as most assignments were group-based. “We spent most of our time in the library together, motivating one another. Sometimes we made fun of each other like most friends would, just to keep our sanity,” he said. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in cybersecurity at UTB and is open to doctoral studies in the Sultanate or abroad. – Azlan Othman
