The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Sustainability Masterplan, officially launched alongside the UBD Convocation Festival 2024, is guided by five pillars, which are highlighted at the Convocation Festival exhibition. The masterplan falls under the pillar, ‘Sustainable Stewardship Through Visionary Governance’, indicating responsible management, wise and ethical management of resources, ensuring long viability of sustainable management, strategic priorities, interdisciplinary research as well as the predication and planning for future challenges and opportunities. Other pillars include ‘Driving Innovation Through Sustainability Research’, ‘Cultivating Sustainability Champions Through Transformative Education’, ‘Empowering Sustainable and Resilient Communities through Engagement and Partnership’ and ‘Futuring Sustainability Through Green Campus’. Eight projects, in line with the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the UBD Sustainability Masterplan, are showcased at the exhibition. The ‘Rumpai Laut: Fertilising the Future’ project is led by Dr Faizah binti Haji Metali along with team members Yumni Haziqah binti Mohammad, Anis Nadiah binti Abdillah, Norafifah Syakirah binti Muhammad and Sofian Fatih Faizul Arsyad bin Abdul Qadir Zailani. It aims to pioneer the use of waste seaweeds collected from aquaculture cages in the Brunei River as biomass resources to promote eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture practices through the production of an organic seaweed fertiliser. The ‘Wildlife Surveys in Brunei Darussalam for Sustainable Wildlife Management’ project, fronted by Dr Siti Salwa binti Abdul Khalid and Sarimah binti Siang, aims to conduct wildlife biodiversity surveys, focusing on terrestrial mammals. The results will be used to develop models of Bornean mammal habitats, enhancing our understanding of conservation needs to support development planning. The ‘Temperature Sensitivity and Performance Analysis of Floating Solar PV System in Brunei’ project by Nur Fitriyani Nabilah binti Musrapi and Dr Veena Raj aims to test how different solar panel systems perform in the Sultanate, with main focus on floating solar panels. ‘The Automation: UBD Vertical Moss’ project, conducted by UBD Estate Office, focuses on using advanced automation technology to grow and maintain a vertical moss wall with the vertical moss serves as a case study to demonstrate how automation can enhance plant care, making it more efficient and sustainable. The ‘Brunei Driving Simulator Data Modelling’ project, by student Muhammad Luqman bin Mohd Jaffari, aims to gain a deeper understanding of driver behaviour, particularly when approaching yellow or red traffic lights. The ‘I’ve Loved You Before and I’ll Love You Once More’ project by student Damia Rafhanah binti Azyeen Khomeini seeks to explore the possibilities of upcycling. The project started in 2022 with a focus on reusing waste fabric. The ‘What a Waste’ project by UBD student Awangku Ahmad Haziq bin Pengiran Ahmad Sofian calls for everyone to kick the habit of overbuying clothes and spending money on fast fashion.
