Life is a beautiful mosaic, made up of diverse experiences and individuals, each contributing their own unique colours to the bigger picture. Among these are individuals with Down syndrome, whose kindness, resilience, and potential shine brightly, adding depth and warmth to the world around them. Their stories, filled with determination and joy, remind us that with the right support and understanding, everyone has the ability to thrive. **CHEERING FOR CHANGE** A group of driven and compassionate medical students from the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is taking remarkable steps to shine a spotlight on inclusivity and awareness for individuals with Down syndrome. Calling themselves the CHEER group – an acronym that stands for Celebrate and Honour the Extra Chromosome, Embrace and Radiate Down Syndrome – this passionate team comprises six dedicated members: Alviana Amanda Rait, Nursyafiqah Fadzillah binti Haji Hassan, Mirza Aniqah @ Ezza binti Haji Nor Ahmadi, Farah Izzati binti Rosman, Awangku Mohammad Hafizad bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Maun, and Muhammad Al Haziq bin Haji Zulkifli. United by their mission to empower the Down syndrome community, they aim to enhance public understanding and acceptance while offering vital support to individuals and families navigating the unique challenges of this genetic condition. Through their efforts, the CHEER group hopes to create a more inclusive society where everyone’s abilities are celebrated and respected. **A HELPING HAND (AND HEART)** On July 6, the CHEER group set the stage for their impactful mission with a heart-warming volunteering session at the Down Syndrome Association (ABLE) Centre. Dedicating their morning to supporting individuals with Down syndrome, they not only made a difference to participants but also honed their own skills in empathy, patience, and communication. Community Day on the same date took things up a notch, with vibrant Zumba sessions, creative colouring, and other activities designed to enhance social interaction and well-being. The atmosphere buzzed with inclusivity, encouraging self-expression, creativity, and physical fitness. Continuing their efforts, CHEER members brought their dedication to the Child Development Centre (CDC) in Kampong Kiarong on August 8 and 15. With activities like pasta necklace-making and obstacle courses, they focused on building confidence, fine motor skills, and teamwork, fostering an environment where individuals with Down syndrome could express themselves and connect in meaningful ways. **BREAKING BARRIERS** In a creative leap towards empowerment, the CHEER group hosted their “Cheerful Hangout V2” on August 10, featuring a delightful mix of cookie decorating and a mesmerising magic show. This engaging event provided individuals with Down syndrome a chance to showcase their strengths, while offering a supportive space for socialising and sharing aspirations. The initiative was a heart-warming blend of fun and skill-building, creating lasting memories for participants. Among their standout programmes was a specialised Housekeeping Training session at Mulia Hotel on August 12, designed to equip individuals with practical skills for potential employment in the hospitality industry. This hands-on experience not only encouraged independence but also instilled a sense of confidence, giving participants a valuable stepping stone toward future job opportunities. To break down misconceptions and promote inclusivity, CHEER set up awareness booths on August 27, 28, and September 1, featuring interactive games and informative materials. These efforts made learning about Down syndrome both engaging and enjoyable for the public. The culmination came on September 15, with Down Syndrome Family Day at Muara Beach. With 167 participants, including guest of honour Pengiran Dr Hajah Nurolaini binti Pengiran Haji Muhd Kifli, the event was filled with activities like Zumba, coconut bowling, and relay games, providing a vibrant platform for families and individuals with Down syndrome to connect and bond. **LOOKING AHEAD** Through their initiatives, the CHEER group continues to foster an inclusive environment, not only for individuals with Down syndrome but for their families and the wider community. Their commitment to advocacy and inclusivity is helping to shape a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive. By raising awareness and promoting acceptance, CHEER is paving the way for a more compassionate and inclusive Brunei Darussalam.
