Two students from Chung Hua Middle School, Kuala Belait (KB), yesterday proved their creativity by snatching top prizes in a painting competition themed ‘The Belt and Road Initiative’, for primary school students. Year 6 student Syed Khaider Mashhor and Year 5 student Moi An Qi each received a new tablet during the prize presentation ceremony at OneCity Shopping Centre atrium. Syed Khaider Mashhor, whose artwork was a jacket of Brunei and China flags with the zipper symbolising the Belt and Road Initiative linking the two countries, said, “I would like to thank my mother for helping. It took two days to complete the drawing.” On winning the top prize, the 11-year-old said, “I was shocked to find out that I won the top prize. This is my first time winning after having joined several competitions.” Meanwhile, Moi An Qi said, “I would like to thank my teacher for her advice. I also did some research online. PHOTO: RAFI ROSLI Meanwhile, the first prize winners were Safiyyah Lam binti Muhammad Tommy Fatah of Chung Hua Middle School, KB; Fakhrullah bin Sulaiman of Pengiran Pekerma Setia Diraja Sahibul Bandar Primary School; and Nikko Liong Ler Yee of Chung Ching Middle School, Seria. Second prize winners were: Safiyya Humaira binti Mohammad Bokhari Saiful, Nur Sarah Zahirah binti Mohammad Suranizam and Nuraliyah Bashirah binti Mohammad Samardi of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Primary School; Ashley Eliza Pong Cai Yue of Chung Hua Middle School, KB; and Aleeya Sabrina binti Suhairdi of Chung Ching Middle School, Seria. Third prize winners were: Mohammad Iman Ikramuddin bin Haji Shahruddin of Al-Falaah School, Sungai Akar; Saina Wee Yi Ying of Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan; Amanda Aun Ing Yii of Chung Hwa School, Kiudang; Nur Zahiyah binti Mazleajizul of Bukit Panggal Primary School, Tutong; Ainaa Zahirah binti Mohammad Faisal of YSHHB Primary School; Nur Husnina Qaisara of Pengiran Pekerma Setia Diraja Sahibul Bandar Primary School; and Angeline Chong Jie Lin and Kenaniah Yong Shi Zhen of Chung Ching Middle School, Seria. Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo and Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin handed prizes to the winners. Meanwhile, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Corporate) at the Ministry of Education Professor Dr Haji Noor Azam bin Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Haji Othman and Counsellor at the Chinese embassy Wang Haitao presented consolation prizes to 12 other students. The Chinese Ambassador also launched the fifth Brunei Primary School Students Painting Competition exhibition, which will conclude tomorrow. – James Kon
