Hailing from Bavaria, Germany, the esteemed luxury automotive brand BMW has crafted a global reputation rooted in performance and an emphasis on luxury in more recent years. Not long ago, I was chosen as one of the media representatives for the grand BMW Test Drive event in Singapore. Appropriately named the BMW Group Asia Test Fest, the event was meticulously organised by BMW Group Asia. At the Test Fest, both members of the media and influential figures from the host country had an entire afternoon to experience the pinnacle of BMW’s offerings on the bustling streets of Singapore. Encompassing a journey spanning over 100 kilometres (km) around Singapore, the route included strategic pit stops providing participants with the opportunity to switch cars along the way. Joining in the convoy were the BMW 330i Touring, BMW i4 eDrive 35, BMW M3 Touring and BMW M2. But what stood out most for me was, of course, the BMW XM. The BMW XM proves to be an absolute powerhouse, outmatching the confines of Singapore’s streets. PHOTO: BMW GROUP ASIA Despite its substantial size, the frequent sudden stops and numerous traffic lights on the designated route did somewhat dampen the experience. However, even with these factors considered, the undeniable potency of the BMW XM remains unquestionable. From its elevated stance as a sports SUV to its robust, commanding yet subtly sleek exterior, the BMW XM epitomises sheer power. Even more striking is the fact that the BMW XM is a hybrid unlike any other. Boasting an M Hybrid 4.4-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, it delivers an astonishing output of nearly 738 horsepower (hp). When switched to full electric mode, the silence is deceiving, as a single press of the throttle delivers an undeniable surge of torque. Staying faithful to its sports SUV origins, initially, it takes some time to acclimate to manoeuvring the substantial vehicle on the narrow and twisting roads. Yet, over time, you come to value the XM’s adaptive features that progressively simplify each successive turn. However, on the open highway, the BMW XM glides like a beast, enabling you to swiftly achieve high speeds with just a moment’s notice. As familiarity with the vehicle grows, the exceptional engineering prowess of BMW becomes increasingly apparent in the BMW XM. This model includes the standard Adaptive M Suspension Professional, an M Sport Differential, and the intelligent all-wheel drive prowess of the M xDrive system, collectively affording a seamless driving experience. A notable and gratifying addition is the expansive new BMW Curved Display, housing the latest iDrive 8 Operating System, replete with an M-specific design. This set-up facilitates effortless access to all essential driver functions. When combined with the standard Active Driving Assistant Professional system, which incorporates features like active blind spot detection and lane departure warning, navigating unfamiliar roads becomes notably simpler. Rumours suggest that the BMW XM could potentially make its debut in the Brunei market, and I feel genuinely fortunate to have had the chance to put this impressive beast to the test. When it does eventually arrive in the Brunei market, it is bound to create a significant impact within the Sports SUV segment. After the test drive came to an end, all of us were undoubtedly fatigued; however, each participant had their own preferred ride, and for me, without a doubt, it was the BMW XM. Cruising through Singapore in the epitome of BMW’s offerings undeniably provides a distinctive and unparalleled way to experience the vibrancy of the Lion City. – Adib Noor
